A Walmart shopper was stopped in her tracks after spotting bizarre new anti-theft packaging in the meat aisle. Red meat is now sealed in metal wire cages, a security measure that has left many on social media upset. Each package is locked with a clasp that can only be removed by a store employee using a special device. If any other attempt is made, an alarm is triggered at the exit. Social media users expressed their disdain with remarks like “What’s happening in the land of the free?” and “Instead of making food affordable, they’ve imprisoned it.” Rising theft — especially at self-checkouts — has led Walmart and other grocery stores to employ increasingly extreme measures. The retail giant is also cracking down on theft by embedding hidden barcodes into the packaging of some of its own Great Value products.
