The Incredible House Hidden in Plain Sight

In the center of the city of Porto in Portugal is a fascinating house, but thousands walk past it every day without even noticing it. The tiny 5-foot-wide Casa Escondido is nestled between two churches and is the city’s narrowest house. The building looks like one enormous church at first glance, but it’s actually three separate buildings. The house itself is so thin that it almost looks like a wall, characterized only by a simple green door and two windows. Built in 1768, the property is surprisingly spacious, with a living room, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, and a study. Inside is an impressive spiral staircase, as the building is spread out over three floors. The Igreja dos Caremlitas (Church of the Carmelites) on the left was built for Carmelite nuns in the 17th century, while the church on the right — Igreja do Carmo (Carmo Church) — was built for monks in the 18th century. The tiny house was occupied by chaplains, artists, doctors and the church’s caretaker until the 1980s.
