Not only do hotels provide lodging for travelers and others in need of accommodations, they’re supposed to provide relaxation as well. However, there’s one hotel that’s providing a good dose of fear. Enter the five-star Grand Hyatt Shanghai Hotel, which has an atrium so high and spiraled that it triggers acrophobia — fear of heights. The hotel occupies floors 53 through 87 of the 88-story, 380-foot high Jin Mao Tower, with the spectacular 33-story, barrel-vaulted atrium soaring to a height of 377 feet from floor 56, where afternoon tea is served at a restaurant called Patio. The space is surrounded by 548 rooms and 28 corridors, and to say it’s Instagram bait is an understatement. One guest wrote on a travel website: “For those with even a mild fear of heights, this will be completely intolerable.” For some people, footage filmed from the top of the atrium is enough to put them off visiting altogether. For those who have a high tolerance of height, the hotel’s rooms offer incredible views of The Bund, a waterfront street of historical buildings. Cloud 9, the hotel’s cocktail bar, is located on the 87th floor of the tower, so guests who dare to drink there will quite literally be among the clouds.
