Rigamarole

A long and complicated process that is annoying and seems unnecessary.
"She turned up an hour late with some rigamarole about catching the wrong bus."
The term started as "Ragman roll," referring to official documents with many seals attached, such as the 13th-century records where Scottish nobility swore allegiance to Edward I of England. By the 18th century, it appeared in writing as "rigamarole."
