Chicago Officials Are Warning Dog Owners to Follow Winter Rules

Chicago authorities are warning dog owners that their pets risk death if they relieve themselves on light poles without wearing shoes on the city streets this winter. The bizarre caution comes after a dog was reportedly killed over the weekend when it stepped on an electrified manhole cover. Officials said such incidents are rare but more probable in the winter. The accident was caused by a pinched wire, which can cause manhole overs and light poles to become electrically “live.” Stray voltage can occur when exposed wires come in contact with moisture, creating a hidden electrical hazard. To avoid an incident of this nature, dog owners are encouraged to dress their dogs in booties or prevent them from urinating on light poles.
