This Dump Cake Is a Lazy Baker’s Dream

Making a cake is never easy. With all the bowls, whisks, and measuring cups, it can feel a lot more like a chemistry experiment than a celebratory snack. How many times have you wished you could just dump everything in a dish and bake it? Well, now you can. The dump cake is the easiest cake you could ever hope to make. At minimum, it’s made with a boxed cake mix, butter, and canned fruit or pie filling. The idea is to dump the ingredients into a dish and bake, period. No extra bowls, no utensils, no mixing. Dump cakes are a lifesaver when you need a dessert fast, but they’re also fun to experiment with because of the variety of cake mixes, pie fillings and canned fruit that are available. Here is a recipe for an apple dump cake:

Ingredients:

  • • 2 cans of apple pie filling
  • • 1 box yellow or spice cake mix
  • • 1½ sticks (6 ounces) cold unsalted butter

 Directions:

• Preheat oven to 350ºF.

• Lightly coat a 9X13 baking dish with unsalted butter.

• Spread the pie filling in the dish in an even layer.

• Sprinkle the yellow cake mix evenly over the pie filling.

• Cut the unsalted butter into thin slices and arrange them over the cake mix in an even layer, covering the entire surface.

• Bake 1 hour, or until golden brown and a crispy crust begins to form.

• Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
