Why Viewers Are Tuning Out of Modern TV Shows

Viewers are tuning out of television shows, primarily due to excessively long waits between seasons. It’s known as "season premiere fatigue,” and viewers have had enough. Back in the 1980s, the gap between consecutive seasons of a television show was almost always about 3-4 months. Today, that gap has increased to an all-time high of 21 months. That longer gap has caused major drops in audience engagement. Once a series takes a long hiatus, fans often forget plot lines or lose interest altogether. Studies have shown that viewership can drop by as much as 59% after an extended gap. It could be that Hollywood has its hands full right now, since half the town is abandoning the Golden State in favor of moving where housing costs and the cost of living are considerably less. It makes you wonder how long Hollywood will remain the center of the entertainment industry.
