Grocery stores don’t all have the same prices, and finding the one with the best prices can help reduce costs. While Walmart or Aldi might be the first places that come to mind when thinking about budget-friendly stores, neither takes the crown. A recent study comparing major grocery store chains crowned Kroger as the most affordable place to buy groceries in America. At Kroger, you can get 15 staple items — including dairy, starches, chicken, and baking ingredients — for a total of $30. While not every single one of these items was cheapest at Kroger, most were, some by a significant margin. For example, a dozen eggs at Kroger cost $1.29, compared to $1.47 at Walmart. Kroger’s Corn Flakes and bread edged out the competition by more than 20¢ each. Sugar was actually Kroger’s best deal, priced at $2.56 for four pounds, which is 63¢ cheaper than the next best, Aldi. Coming in second place in the most affordable category was Walmart, followed by Aldi in third place.
