For more than two decades, Mary Ann Franco from Florida lived in complete darkness. After suffering a spinal injury in a car accident, she gradually lost her eyesight until she could see nothing but blackness. Then, in what doctors later described as a medical mystery, a simple fall inside her home appeared to change everything. Franco reportedly tripped over a tile in her living room and fell backward, hitting her head. The accident left her badly injured and forced her to wear a neck brace for months before undergoing a 4-hour neck surgery. When she woke up in the hospital after the procedure, something extraordinary had happened. At first, she was too disoriented from the anesthesia to fully understand it. Then the next morning, she looked out of her hospital window and realized that she could suddenly see trees, buildings and sunlight for the first time in more than 20 years. Even the neurosurgeon who operated on her admitted that he couldn't fully explain the recovery. Dr. John Afshar later described the case as a “true miracle," saying that he had never expected the procedure to affect her eyesight at all. Franco herself believed faith played a role in her recovery. Although her vision wasn't perfect, Franco said she was simply grateful to be able to see again after so many years in darkness.
