Farmers Invite Jazz Band to Play “Moosic" for Cows in a Bid to Boost Milk Production

The Grimshaw Family have farmed in Lancashire, UK, for over 100 years, and like other dairy farmers they want to see their cows produce as much milk as possible. They have, however, taken a most unique approach to getting their dairy cows to do that — they hired a live jazz band in hopes the music would boost milk production. Reading that music can increase milk production by up to 4%, they decided to experiment. The Dixiebeats performed to both the Jersey and Holstein cows at Smithills Open Farm in Bolton last week. Their 30-minute set consisted of fast and slower compositions, which staff said was “moosic to their ears.” “The cows took a little warming up to, but they seemed to really enjoy it,” said 25-year-old farmer Caitlyn Horrocks. She went on to say that a cow named Peggy stayed at the fence for the entire performance. There’s no word yet on whether the music paid off, but the Dixiebeats' performance at the farm racked up over 266,000 views on TikTok.
