When Johan Helberg, who lives Byneset, Norway, woke up Friday morning, he never expected to find a cargo ship in his front garden. The 443-foot ship just missed his house by feet. Helberg was only alerted to the commotion by his panicked neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, who was awakened at 5 a.m. by the sound and had watched the ship as it headed straight for the shore. Once Helberg learned of the incident, he immediately went out to see for himself. “I had to bend my neck to see the top of it,” said Helberg, “It was unreal.” About 15 feet further south and the ship would have disturbed Helberg’s sleep in a very up-close-and-personal way, as it was that close to his bedroom. The Cypriot-flagged cargo ship, the NCL Salten, had 16 people on board and was traveling southwest through the Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when the ship went off-course. No one was injured in the incident. It’s not know what caused the crash, but Norwegian police are said to be investigating.
