If You Really Want to “Chill Out,” Stay in an Ice Igloo

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live like an Eskimo? The Iglu-Dorf hotel can give you a feel for it, because it runs five igloo holiday villages in the Alps that are made entirely of snow and ice and are rebuilt every year. Temperatures inside are chilly — between 35º below zero and 35º above — and even the beds are carved from snow. Not to worry — guests are provided with sleeping bags that will keep them snug and warm in temperatures as low as -104º. The rooms all feature thermal mats, electric lights, and USB power connectors. Guests can also warm up in an outdoor whirlpool. There are three igloo villages in Switzerland: Davos, Gstaad, and Zermat; one in Innsbruck, Austria; and one in Zugspitze, Germany. The igloos are all connected by a corridor system that provides shelter from the elements, and the structures are so sturdy you could drive a snowcat over them and nothing would happen. While there are features like restaurants and bars, saunas, and wooden huts with open fires, there are no showers at any of the villages. Rooms rent for an average of $600 per night.
