Viral Hack Says You’re Putting the Dishwasher Tablet in the Wrong Place, But Is It True?

A piece of dishwasher-related advice has been making the rounds on social media, suggesting that dishwasher tablets aren’t actually meant to go in the dispenser compartment, but are more effective if you just throw them into the body of the dishwasher. Is that actually true? It turns out that experts at Whirlpool, Maytag and Frigidaire all agree that adding the dishwasher tablet into the detergent drawer is essential because it ensures the detergent is released at the right time during the cycle. This allows it to dissolve evenly and distribute effectively, delivering the best cleaning results. Placing the capsule in the bottom of the dishwasher may lead to it dissolving too early or unevenly, reducing cleaning efficiency. If you’re using the detergent tablets correctly and your dishes are still coming out dirty, here are some tips:

  • Clean the filter: A clogged filter can prevent proper water circulation.
  • Check the spray arms: Ensure they are blockage-free and can rotate freely. Clean any debris or food particles from the spray arm holes.
  • Select the correct wash cycle: Make sure you are using a suitable washing program for the level of soil on your dishes and the quantity of dishes.
  • Avoid overloading: Overloading the dishwasher can prevent water from reaching all surfaces of your dishes. Make sure there’s enough space between items for effective cleaning.
