Perhaps recognizing that there’s no better way to grab the public’s attention than a little bit of outrage, Goldfish has changed the name of its iconic cheese crackers to Chilean Sea Bass. The move, meant to turn heads and stir up some free publicity, won’t affect the taste, shape, or anything else about the cracker. Apparently, a radical name change is one of the easiest ways for a brand to stand out in a commercial-intense world. IHOP saw a flood of attention in 2018 when it announced that it was changing its name to IHOb (International House of Burgers). The name change was fake, of course, but it helped the company to quadruple its burger sales. In 2009, Pizza Hut became Pasta Hut to introduce its new line of Tuscani Pastas, and in 2016 Budweiser asked consumers to call it “America” for a brief time. No one did, but it still increased sales. So what’s the goal of this name change? The company says the name change is meant to bring back older snack lovers who munched on the cheesy crackers in their younger years. Gen Z and Millennials are the target audience. One last thing…….don’t run to the grocery store expecting to find a package of Chilean Sea Bass crackers. You can only get them online, but you’d better hurry. You’ll only be able to buy one — actually two, they’re being sold in pairs — for $7.38 through October 30.
