Kate and Sam Carter, owners of the Cheesy Toast Shack in St. Andrews, Scotland, say they were giving free food replacements to dozens of customers each day due to seagulls swooping in and snatching their just-purchased food. Because it was costing them hundreds of dollars a day, they became desperate to find a solution. That’s when Sam came up with the idea of adding “seagull insurance” to every purchase to try and cover the losses caused by the winged menaces. "The gulls are super aggressive and actually terrifying,” said Kate. "We are a family run business and I can't just sit and watch a sandwich get stolen and not replace it, so I'll always give another for free.” The couple had made various attempts to deter the gulls — including playing birds of prey noises and flying birds of prey kites — to no avail. Because the sandwiches at the shop are in the neighborhood of £9.50 ($12.14), having one snatched by a seagull is a big deal. The seagull insurance runs £1 ($1.34) per order.
