New York City’s Flatiron building has had many lives, mostly as a commercial space. Now, the triangular building is entering a new era as a residential building where apartments cost up to $58.5 million. Completed in 1902, the Flatiron was once mocked and thought to be foolish, but now it’s one of New York’s most admired buildings. Named Flatiron for its resemblance to a clothes iron, the building’s ornamental brick and terracotta exterior has been hidden behind scaffolding for the better part of the last seven years. Now, the re-imagined Flatiron will open to very wealthy residents later this fall. There are 36 apartments in the building, including some that span entire floors. The building offers a myriad of amenities, including a 60-foot lap pool, fitness center, spa, billiards room, piano lounge, package room, private wine cellars, and 24-hour doormen. So far, 14 of the 36 apartments are already under contract. The cheapest — a 3-bedroom on the third floor — was purchased for $10.9 million. The flagship apartment, which occupies the entire top floor, is under contract for $58.5 million. It offers 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a sauna, 2 dressing rooms, a dining room and a breakfast room, and a 72-foot great room. One thing you can say about the Flatiron building — it was built to last, even if its price means it’s far beyond the reach of the majority of New Yorkers.
