For Some Pilots, Home Is An LAX Parking Lot

Parking Lot B at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a place where a few dozen commercial pilots, flight attendants, and ground crew call home. Every few minutes, another plane lands or takes off on the runway just a few yards away. The noise is deafening, but the price is right. For a mere $60 a month, they can rent a parking space on Parking Lot B for their RV. Some live in their RVs part-time, while others call them home. Instead of getting hotel rooms, it’s cheaper for them to rent space at the parking lot. Clearly, it’s the cheapest rent you’ll find in Los Angeles. Everyone living there has passed background checks and they all have valid airport IDs. There are some regulations, like no outdoor barbecues. Some “residents” shower at nearby gyms, filling up their water tanks at the beach a few miles away. Given the state of airline business, LAX officials are more than happy to let the pilots and others continue to live in Parking Lot B. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a place airline employees can call home, even if only temporarily.
