California Bans Loud Commercials On Streaming Services

Viewers have long complained that commercials can be much louder than the programs they’re streaming. One minute they’re engrossed in a peaceful nature documentary, and the next they’re scrambling for the remote to turn down the volume on an announcer shouting information about treatment for flatulence. Now, a new law in California says commercials can’t be louder than the content they interrupt. This move aligns streaming services with a 15-year-old federal law that applies to traditional broadcast and cable TV commercials. Each violation of the new law will result in a fine of up to $2,500. The law will take effect July 1, 2026 and is expected to lead to a national change.
