Rare Frank Lloyd Wright Home Hits the Market

If you’ve ever wanted to live inside the creation of a famous architect, now’s your chance. A 3-bedroom home in Florida designed by Frank Lloyd Wright — the only one in the state — is on the market. Compared to the architect’s other creations, Spring House can be acquired for the relatively affordable price of $2 million. There’s just one catch: the building will require renovations before the buyer is able to move in. Located just outside Tallahassee, Spring House was constructed in 1954. Wright designed the house in accordance with his philosophy of blending a home’s interior with the exterior environment. The 2,040-square-foot structure was constructed using natural materials native to the region, including red cypress and Ocala limestone, allowing it to blend into the surrounding forest. The home’s shape is like a ship’s hull, with curved windows that bathe the open interior in sunlight. The house sits on 10 acres, and features 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Time and Florida’s climate have taken their toll on the Spring House. Hurricanes have left behind leaks, weakening the home’s columns. Insects and woodpeckers have eaten into the wooden exterior, and the electrical and plumbing systems are outdated and in need of replacement. For these reasons, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added the Spring House to its 2014 list of “Most Endangered Historic Places” in the U.S. Hopefully, its next owner will restore the house to its former glory.
