Probably the saddest thing about our lives is that everything comes to an end. Now, one of the best things that ever happened to the Internet has come to an end. Maru, the most well-known cat on YouTube, crossed the rainbow bridge on September 6. Now he’s trying to squeeze himself into boxes in heaven. Maru was born on May 24, 2007 and was a Scottish Straight cat (like the Scottish Fold but without the folded ears). When he was 4 months old, he came under the care of a Japanese woman known only as “Mugumogu," who named him Maru, the Japanese word for “round.” Beginning in 2008, Mugumogu starting posting videos of Maru on her YouTube channel. Typically, the videos were of Maru trying to squeeze into boxes. It wasn’t long before the feline became an Internet sensation, with Entertainment Weekly mentioning him and The New York Times featuring him in an article. Maru even managed to secure the title of “Most Watched Animal on YouTube” with Guinness World Records. Unfortunately, Maru developed lung cancer, and after several weeks of poor health, the beloved feline passed away at the age of 18. Tributes have been making the rounds on social media, and everyone agrees that Maru will be sorely missed.
