Cracker Barrel Made Another Quiet Change, and It'll Make Your Blood Boil

Fresh off a week in which they nearly lost 12% of their cap market, including hundreds of millions of dollars, Cracker Barrel is making another change that’s sure to enrage people further. After changing their 50-year-old logo and redesigning their restaurant interiors to be so generic they look like any other restaurant, they decided to reword the peg game. The peg game has been around since Cracker Barrel opened in 1960, and it’s been a staple on their dining tables ever since. It’s a fun way for diners to pass the time while they wait for their food, Plus, it’s been available in the store for $5 for anyone interested in brushing up on their skills at home. The simple game is made up of pegs and a wooden triangle. Fans will remember the scoring system: if you leave only one peg, you're a “genius.” If you leave two pegs, you’re “purty smart.” But it starts getting a little judgy with three pegs (you're just plain "dumb") and four or more pegs labels you an "EG-NO-RA-MOOSE.” Now, in the era of “everybody wins a trophy,” the store has changed the wording on the peg game. Now, it reads a DEI-pleasing, “Leave only one, you’re a genius! Leave two, rocking the chair but not the game. Leave three or more, no need to be embarrassed, try again!” Re-wording the back of the peg game so people don't get offended when they inevitably suck at it? Come on. Sucking at the peg game is as American as apple pie. It's a rite of passage, a tradition. That game made us all stronger as kids growing up, and it challenges us still to this day. What’s the world coming to? No more cracker, no more barrel, no more being called out by the peg game for losing? What's next?
