The chocolate box cottages and picturesque fields of the Cotswolds have been attracting A-listers looking for their own slice of rural life in the English countryside. While British celebrities have become known for their country estates away from the prying eyes of London, celebrities from across the pond have descended on the British version of The Hamptons. Kourtney Kardashian, Ellen DeGeneres and JD Vance have shared gushing social media posts about the charm that can only be found in the Cotswolds. However, this love affair appears to be one-sided, with locals less than thrilled by their new neighbors. Residents say the “invasion of obnoxious Americans, who disregard British culture” have driven them insane. One resident name Laura, who has lived in the area for 36 years, said she makes sure to avoid visiting any restaurants or pubs that could appeal to American celebrities. Another resident, 73-year-old Keith Masters, said he would rather steer clear of the Americans invading his home. “It would drive me insane to talk to these people, because they never admit when they’re wrong.” Even those who work in shops, restaurants and pubs have expressed their disdain at having to deal with pushy American celebrities. Lexie McConnell, who works at The Hollybush gastropub, said Americans are the most difficult customers. “They’ll go and seat themselves, even if there’s a sign asking them to wait.” It seems that locals are going to have to learn to coexist with their American counterparts, as an increasing number of celebrities are choosing to escape the U.S. and settle in the region. On the up side, business owners realize that celebrities aren't shy about spending money, so it’s turning out to be good for the local economy.
