The southern delicacy known as “Farmer’s Coke” has divided the Internet over its unique combination of salty and sweet. A Farmer’s Coke involves pouring salty peanuts into an ice-cold bottle of Coca-Cola and crunching on the peanuts as you take a swig of the drink. The snack combo dates back to the 1920s when shelled peanuts began showing up at country stores and gas stations where the familiar contour bottle of Coke was already being sold. The combination was born out of convenience for workers who needed to use their hands. “Working people may not have had a place to wash up, so they poured the peanuts directly into the bottle and their hands stayed clean,” said food historian Rick McDaniel. He also suggested that the Farmer’s Coke helped make it easier to drive a stick shift. Nearly 100 years later, the unique beverage-snack combo has left people divided. Social media is filled with comments like, “Have done it many times! Love the combo of sweet and salty!” Still others didn’t see the fascination, with one commenter posting, “Until one gets stuck in your throat and you choke to death.” Nevertheless, a whopping 74% of those polled said they would give the unique snack a try.
