Young Welder Builds Clever Lock Box to Combat Porch Pirates

Brandon Mejia, from Frederick, Maryland, lost a sentimental necklace to porch pirates when he ordered a necklace for Mother’s Day and had it stolen from his porch. The 22-year-old got online to research secure boxes, but found that the best available options were either too complicated or too expensive. That’s when he decided to use his welding experience to build his own secure box for delivery packages. Teaming up with his father, Brandon spent $100 on stainless steel to build his porch pirate-roof box. Once the steel sections were cut, he welded them together from both the outside and inside to make the box waterproof. He then painted the box black, so it wouldn’t attract too much attention. Finally, he attached the lid with a built-in keypad. To make it clear to delivery drivers, he also added some delivery logo stickers he found online. The box has an automatic locking mechanism that only locks after a package is placed inside and can only be opened using a personal 4-digit code. Brandon says he’s been using the box for six months now and it’s been working great.
