The Convict Who Mailed Himself Out of Prison

We know that real life prison escapes aren't the result of complex schemes, but a combination of dumb luck, indifferent guards, and unintentional hilarity. Take the case of Richard Lee McNair, who received two life sentences for armed robbery. In 2006, McNair managed to get a job repairing mail bags while serving time at North Dakota State Penitentiary in Bismarck, North Dakota. It wasn’t long before he took the opportunity to climb inside one and mail himself out of prison. After being forklifted to a nearby warehouse, McNair dusted his hands off and simply walked away. To make things even worse, he was spotted hiking along a railway line, questioned, and let go by a police officer on the day of his escape. How did he manage that? Despite the fact that he gave two different names during the course of the conversation, had no identification, and matched the description of the escaped convict the cop was looking for, the officer simply gave him some pointers on railroad safety and sent him on his way. McNair was eventually caught and is currently back in prison……..as least as far as we know.
