An unidentified French motorist may have broken the record for the longest time driving a vehicle without a valid license, insurance, or inspection — 28 years. A routine traffic stop turned out to be a memorable bust for a motorized police unit in Rhone, France, last week. After checking the license plate, the police pulled the vehicle over. Upon checking the driver’s papers, the police realized that the vehicle had no insurance and, worst of all, the man’s driver’s license had been revoked in 1997. The man casually told the officer that his license was revoked for a DUI and he simply hadn’t bothered to reapply for it. He compared his old driver’s license to “an expired but still edible yogurt.” Apparently, the man had decided that if he didn’t have a valid license, there was no point in getting mandatory car insurance or taking the car in for inspections. What was truly baffling to police is the fact that the man had managed to slip through police checks for 28 years. Unfortunately, his achievement won’t win him any awards, only a date in court.
