What Is Mind Blindness?

When most people are asked to imagine an object — like a cat or an apple — they have no problem conjuring up a distinct picture in their minds. There are some people, however, who simply can’t come up with mental images. They have a condition known as aphantasia — or “mind blindness.” The condition is rare, affecting only about 4% of the general population. The causes remain a mystery, though there are some theories. So far, scientists believe that aphantasia could be congenital and may be a characteristic that runs in a family. Researchers have also traced a few cases that were the result of illness or injury that impacts the brain. Those with the condition can still recognize faces and objects, even though they can’t visualize them. On a positive note, people with aphantasia may have more protection from vividly remembering painful or traumatic events in their lives. This could be a benefit, especially for those with PTSD. Most of the treatment options available are experimental at this point, but since it’s not considered a mental health issue or medical condition, it doesn’t really need to be treated.
