With its thick, lion-like mane and powerful build, the Chow Chow is one of the world’s oldest dog breeds. Originally bred in China as guard dogs and hunting dogs, these fluffy companions now fetch a hefty price tag, with the average price being $3,000 or more. Of course, that doesn’t include their high grooming costs. Chow Chows come in two coat types: smooth and rough, and the rough coat requires more extensive grooming. Basic grooming — which includes bathing, brushing, nail trimming, teeth brushing, and ear cleaning — can run as much as $200 a month. Let’s not forget about the cost of food. Depending on the quality and brand, dog food can set you back $30 to $90 a month. Specialized diets or freshly-made food can cost $100 or more a month. Add onto all that the cost of veterinary care, toys and treats and you’re looking at shelling out in the neighborhood of $4,500 a year. Still, if you want a dog with the disposition of a cat — aloof but a major cuddle bug — the Chow Chow is the dog for you.
