The “Bionic” Girl from the UK Who Feels No Pain or Hunger

We’ve all heard the saying, “no pain, no gain.” However, that’s not the case for Olivia Farnsworth, a young girl in the UK known as “bionic” because she feels no pain and never gets hungry. The 16-year-old has a condition known as chromosome six deletion. According to the National Organization of Rare Disorders, people who have a deletion on chromosome 6p often exhibit distinct facial features, intellectual difficulties, and developmental delays. It’s believed that Olivia is the only person in the world who possess all three symptoms together. Olivia’s mother, Niki Trepak (pictured above), said her daughter has never had a sense of danger, explaining when Olivia was just 7 years old she was run over by a car and dragged down the street. She was taken to the hospital to be checked out and wound up with scrapes on her toes and her hip, but both were minor. Doctors said they thought what saved Olivia was the fact that she didn’t tense up, and that’s because she had no fear. Olivia’s mother went on to say that her daughter stopped sleeping during the day at the age of 9 months and never cried as an infant. Olivia also has no hunger, instead becoming conditioned to eat. “She eats at school because every one else does,” said Trepak. Unfortunately, there's no treatment for the chromosome disorder. “All we can do is alleviate the symptoms,” said Dr. Beverly Searle.
