Florida resident Wendy Koutouzis has filed a lawsuit against Publix, charging the popular supermarket with using a deceptive pricing tactic to overcharge customers. She claims the chain’s self-checkout scales inflate the weight of meat, cheese and produce, causing shoppers to pay more than the advertised price without realizing it. One example cited in the lawsuit involves a pack of pork that should have cost $14, but she was charged $20 because the scales added more than a pound to its actual weight. The lawsuit seeks compensation not only for Koutouzis but also for any other customers who may have unknowingly been charged. The class-action lawsuit could impact shoppers across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The law firm handling the case is encouraging other Publix shoppers who suspect they have been overcharged at self-checkout to come forward and join the lawsuit. The grocery store chain has declined to comment on the ongoing lawsuit.
