The Ugly $3.99 Christmas Ornament That Shoppers Are Buying Out

Say goodbye to cute Santa toys and Christmas tree ornaments. This year’s favorite Christmas decoration is a Ty toy gingerbread man with giant eyes and a crooked smile — and it’s selling out fast. After going viral on social media, the plush toy, dubbed “Cookie,” was sold out at numerous stores. Employees of CVS began questioning why young women were coming into their stores in search of the gingerbread toy. The key ring Cookie retails for $3.99 on the Ty website, while the larger version, dubbed “Nutmeg,” sells for $5.99. At the height of Beanie Babies, more than 64% of Americans owned at least one. Collectors became obsessed, buying them and then reselling them far beyond their starting $5 price point. Sales hit more than $280 million by the end of 1996.
