Scientists Have An Intriguing New Theory About Our Eyebrows

Eyebrows are an important part of the communication of human beings. Ultimately, expressive eyebrows are a biological mechanism to demonstrate to other people what we’re genuinely feeling. Our eyebrows can communicate the extremes of aggression or fear, and, in combination with other coordinated facial movements, the entire range of human emotions. Aside from assisting in expressing feelings, eyebrows are an important feature of recognition. In fact, they’re even more important than the eyes. Because eyebrows sit on the curvature of the forehead, they are a stable facial feature. A 2009 study showed that if the eyebrows of a person in a photo were removed, it reduced the chances of recognition substantially, and significantly more than removing the eyes themselves.
