Monkey Sightings in Florida Town Prompt Police to Issue Dire Warning

Residents of Orange City, Fla., are on the lookout for monkeys roaming the streets after the local police department received multiple reports of primate sightings within the city. The exact number of loose monkeys remains unknown, but officers are urging residents to use caution if they encounter one. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the response to locate the monkeys, whose origin is unknown. Police are warning the public never to feed or approach the monkeys, which could illicit an aggressive response. Tour boat captain Colin Innes spotted one of the primates swinging through the trees along the St. Johns River and believes they are rhesus macaques. Rhesus macaques have tested positive for Herpes B, a rare viral infection that can lead to severe brain damage or death if not treated quickly.
