Annie Niu (above left) has finally admitted that she has been playing the part of her dead twin in order to protect her grandparents. The ruse for hiding the fact that her twin sister had passed away was actually Annie’s father’s idea. Out of fear that the bad news might kill her grandparents, every holiday Annie pretended to be her twin, who died from viral meningitis years ago. However, when her 92-year-old grandmother was on her deathbed, Annie decided it was time to come clean. Though her grandmother was upset, she received the news better than some of Annie’s aunts, who promptly took down every photo Annie’s sister was in. “Imagine my surprise when I took my kids to go visit my grandpa and I look on the walls and none of our photos are there,” said Annie. While many on social media showed empathy for Annie’s situation, others were confused by the family’s intentions. “Didn’t they ask where she was for 5 years?” wrote one commenter. Others sympathized with Annie, with one commenter posting, “You protected them from pain for a long while. I hope you feel lighter after finally letting go of that heavy emotional load.” To this day, Annie’s grandfather doesn’t know.
