Fond Farewells On a Timer: New Zealand Airport Limits Drop-Off Hugs To 3 Minutes

Dunedin Airport in the South Island of New Zealand has ignited a heated discussion with its recent introduction of a 3-minute limit on hugs in its drop-off zone. The new rule suggests that departing passengers should use the parking lot for their fond farewells. The airport’s decision has drawn mixed reactions on social media. Some users expressed outrage over the restriction on hugging, while others were surprised that the airport still offers a free drop-off area. Daniel De Bono, CEO of Dunedin Airport, explained that the rationale behind the hug limit time is to move people along more quickly. Describing airports as “hotbeds of emotion,” he cited a study suggesting that a 20-second hug is enough to release the “love hormone” oxytocin. He pointed out that the airport's parking lot provides an alternative for those seeking longer farewells, allowing a 15-minute visit for free.
