Some people love going all out for Halloween, draping their homes in fake blood and putting creepy skeletons in their yards. However, wildlife experts warn that putting fake cobwebs in yards can be harmful to wildlife. Fake cobwebs pose a danger to birds especially, as they can become entangled in it and suffer injuries. “Once they get stuck, it’s really difficult for them to escape,” said ornithologist Maria Kincaid. She also warned that insects can get caught in cobwebs, which can deprive birds of a food source in the winter months. Meanwhile animal welfare organization Four Paws is reminding pet owners that the spooky season can be stressful for pets. To make the day less scary and harmful for dogs and cats the organization asks that people consider walking their dogs earlier in the day and keeping their pets in a secluded room when strangers come to the door. The organization also pointed out that animals — dogs especially — communicate with their ears and tails and should not be restricted by costumes.
