England’s Southern Water is reminding residents to only flush the “three Ps” down the toilet: pee, poop and paper. The water collection, treatment and supply company said recently that a wastewater crew was dispatched to the city of Shoreham to clear a blocked sewer. What they found in the blocked sewer was stacks of discarded candy wrappers. Alex Saunders of the Wastewater Networks for Southern Water said the team located the blockage and cleared the candy wrappers before there was any internal flooding. He said from now on when they warn people not to put “unflushables” like wet wipes and sanitary products in the toilet, they will have to include candy wrappers as well. The company currently has more than 22,000 artificial intelligence monitors to detect sewer blockages.
