What It’s Like in a $32,000-a-Night Suite on the World’s Most Expensive Train

Most people wouldn’t put the words “luxury” and “train” together, but they’ve obviously never been on the Venice Simplon-Orient Express. The Grand Suite, which is the train’s most luxurious cabin, costs upwards of $32,000 a night from Paris to Venice for a single occupancy. The private, wood-paneled room includes a spacious living area with a couch and a dining table. The bedroom has a double bed — complete with carved woodwork adorning the headboard — which cleverly lifts up to provide storage space for luggage. Topping things off, there’s a marble-clad bathroom with a shower, a frosted window for privacy, a glass wash basin, and an old-school toilet. While you can have room service bring your meals to your cabin, a trip to one of the 3 dining cars is worth the effort. White-gloved waiters serve chilled champagne, along with entrees that run the gamut from Chilean Sea Bass to Bellini Peach Melba. As part of the personalized service, when you return to your cabin after dinner, you will find a chocolate dessert with a message piped on the top. The next morning, you are served breakfast in your suite before arriving in Venice. There are various departures on the Vice Simplon-Orient Express each month, with many of the places booked months in advance. Trips run from 1-5 nights. Its most popular journey runs from London to Venice and takes 2 days with one night onboard.
