Walrus Is Given His Own Raft So He Will Stop Sinking Boats

Whether you’re a human or an animal, we all have to go through some rough spots in life. A walrus named Wally is no different. It seems that he fell asleep on an iceberg somewhere in the Arctic, having no idea he would end up on the coast of Ireland. Walruses are known to be great swimmers, but not many of them would choose to make a journey from the Arctic to the coast of Western Europe. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to Wally, and it wasn’t long before the big guy became a darling of the Internet. Most people who saw Wally were quick to fall in love with him. Some sympathized with the walrus so much that he became their source of inspiration, resulting in a painting and a children’s book. However, not all the attention Wally garnered was positive. As he made his journey through the west coast of Europe, Wally became tired and began looking for resting spots to regain his strength. While there were plenty of structures, Wally decided the boats were his resting place of choice. At roughly 1,800 pounds, many of the boats were either damaged or sunk completely. Fortunately, the people of the area had a soft spot for Wally, and British Divers Marine Life Rescue ended up delivering a specially-made floating pontoon for the walrus to rest on. Seal Rescue Ireland even issued an official warning asking people to stay away from Wally as much as possible to keep from stressing him out. Wally drifted on his personal couch for a while, and once he was ready to leave the area Seal Rescue Ireland made sure to equip him with a special float to help him on his journey back north. A few weeks later he was spotted in Iceland, making it a happy ending for Wally.
