San Alfonso del Mar is a private resort in Algarroba, Chile, about 62 miles west of Santiago. While its beach club, aquarium, night clubs and apartments are top-notch, that’s not what has drawn attention to the resort. San Alfonso del Mar has one of the world’s largest swimming pools. In fact, it’s so big that you can sail on it. At the time of its completion in 2006, it was in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest pool in the world by area. The pool is 3,323 feet long, covering 20 acres, containing some 66 million gallons of seawater, with a maximum depth of 11½ feet. The water is pumped from the adjacent Pacific Ocean, then filtered and treated. Access to the pool is limited to resort residents only.
