New Zealand Woman Creates Pies That Are Truly Works of Art

Devoney Scarfe is a talented food artist from Auckland, New Zealand, whose portfolio of edible masterpieces includes celebrity and animal portraits, whimsical scenes, and hilarious quotes. Scarfe began tinkering with food art as a hobby when she worked part-time at her husband’s advertising agency. Over the years, she has perfected her trade and now posts photos of her edible masterpieces on social media. The impressive pies can take up to a week to complete. The dough is easy enough, but then it has to rest in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours, after which comes the sculpting, painting, and baking. One small mistake can ruin days of hard work. Over the years, Scarfe had to overcome many technical difficulties in order to make her dream pies a reality, such as finding ways of preventing her dough designs from collapsing into the pie filling, or keeping the dough from cracking when baked. It took her about a year of trial and error, and even though there's always something new to be learned, she is satisfied with her level of work. The pies average $120 each.
