A recent episode of the game show Jeopardy! had fans abuzz after they spotted contestant Grant DeYoung sitting down behind the podium instead of standing. Producer Sarah Whitcomb explained in a podcast that all contestants are provided with the option of having a chair, rather than standing. In this case, DeYoung has arthritis in his back, which makes it difficult for him to stand for long periods of time. Whitcomb explained that producers offer contestants the option and require no explanation when contestants opt to sit rather than stand. Contestants who do choose to sit are provided with a swivel chair that puts them at the same height as contestants who choose to stand, which prevents them from standing out. But for a move in the locations of the camera, no one would ever have known that DeYoung was sitting.
