Grubhub delivery driver Alan Moncayo recently delivered lunch to the manager of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Lorton, Va. When he walked in, Moncayo saw a dog in the front window staring at him. “It was love at first sight,” said Moncayo. “He looked at me, and I looked back at him.” Because it was a weekend, the 51-year-old had his 5-year-old daughter Sabina with him. He explained that she had been asking him for a puppy for a long time. Moncayo asked if he could meet Jihoo, the 65-pound black-and-white pit bull mix. Needless to say, the three hit it off immediately. Jihoo had been at the shelter for 240 days after his owners surrendered him. The average length of stay at the shelter is 24 days, so Jihoo had become a fixture. “He was super beloved by our staff,” said Rebecca Cavedon, Communications Manager at the shelter. She explained that Jihoo spent most of the day at the front desk, greeting visitors, but sadly it never resulted in adoption. Moncayo and his daughter made the decision to give Jihoo a “forever home” and took him home that weekend. Amazingly, the shelter not only waived the adoption fee, but also sent the new pet parents home with a brand new dog crate, leash, toys and food.
