The Longstanding Trend of Etching Recipes on Gravestones

It’s been a long-standing tradition to hand down recipes through generations. There’s no better way to honor the memory of a loved one than by using their recipes to prepare food for friends and family. While there are those who hold tight to their culinary secrets — swearing to take them to their graves — there are others who understand that their legacy lies in their recipes. Some of those who didn’t take their recipes to the grave,  instead put them on their gravestones for all who visit to enjoy. Rosie Grant, a University of Maryland grad student studying to be an archivist, recently began collecting recipes from gravestones and posting them on social media for others to make and enjoy. So, while you shouldn’t expect to find rows of gravestones covered in recipes the next time you visit a cemetery, you can get started by checking out some of the gravestone recipes below.
