Texas Mother Who Started Selling Her Old Clothes Online Now Rakes in $735,000 a Year

Monette Mejia is a Houston mother-of-three who had been a stay-at-home mom until 2015 when her family found themselves in need of additional income to supplement her husband’s pay. She began selling off her old clothes on the social commerce marketplace Poshmark before developing the venture into a thriving enterprise. The 45-year-old is now raking in thousands by selling new and used clothing, home goods, toys, and more via social media. The first sale Monette made was a dress that sold for $36 just 11 hours after being posted. A short time later, the family’s finances took a further hit when Monette’s husband spent 44 days in the ICU, followed by open-heart surgery that left him unable to work. Monette, who instantly became the primary breadwinner, knew it was time to ramp up her business. She branched out to other reselling platforms and the $100-$200 a week she had been earning turned into $1,000 a week. Next she proceeded to TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, as well as selling via a livestream that she hosted three times a week. To keep up with demand, she scoured yard sales and clearance bins for bargains that she could resell swiftly. Although her husband made a full recovery, he chose to help Monette run her business instead of returning to work. Between the two, they are now raking in an average of $735,000 a year. The couple has since bought a 6-bedroom home and has sent 2 of their children to college without having to secure student loans. The couple says they love what they do and will continue doing it as long as it brings in the big bucks.
