Swedish Speed-Cameras Pay Drivers to Slow Down

Is it possible to make road safety fun? It turns out that it is……in Sweden. The “Speed Camera Lottery” automatically enters you into a lottery when you come in at or under the speed limit. The genius part of the system is that the prize money comes from the fines paid by speeders. A device placed in the median strip detects the speed of a car passing by, and by combining that with the pictures taken by the camera installed in the front of the device, the car that adheres to the speed limit is registered into the lottery. The Swedish National Society for Road Safety has found the program to be a big success, with the average speed of cars passing the camera dropping 22%. The amounts of winnings have varied from 10,000 to 20,000 Swedish kronor ($960-$1,960).
