The Oldest Bookstore In America

The tale of the Moravian Book Shop isn’t straightforward. Founded in 1745, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, it’s said to be the oldest continuously-running bookstore in America, yet it’s largely under the radar. Established by the Moravian Church and today managed by Barnes and Noble, the shop is also home to the Moravian College bookstore. In its early years, the store served to cater to the needs of the church, importing and selling devotional and liturgical materials for use by churchgoers, missionaries, and students. The shop has also partnered with Lost Tavern Brewing so customers can purchase beer. On top of that, food truck Randevoo opened up its brick-and-mortar location inside the book shop, so people can take a break from browsing the bookshelves and order some delicious Asian fusion fare. Of course, the best thing about visiting the historic book shop is curling up in one of their comfortable chairs with a good book.
