Return To Sender: Missing Dog Takes Himself Back to the Shelter

A rescue dog named Bailey is back home safe after figuring out how to ring the doorbell of the Texas shelter where she went up for adoption. Bailey, a husky mix, was adopted from the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, but soon after, she got loose and ended up running away. The shelter immediately posted an urgent plea on Facebook, asking anyone in the area to call them if they found her. A few people reported sightings of Bailey, but none were able to catch her. What happened next stunned the shelter staff. Just after 1 a.m. on January 31st, Bailey rang the doorbell at the shelter, located about 10 miles from her adoptive home. Somehow, she had found her way to the shelter to summon help in the middle of the night. When one of the shelter workers called the dog's name through the camera’s speaker system, Bailey went right up to the camera (pictured below). Shelter founder Loretta Hyde said she imagined Bailey saying, “I’m here, let me in.” The staff member on duty took Bailey inside, fed her, gave her a warm blanket, and put her to bed for the night. The new owners were contacted the following morning and reported that they had been out most of the night looking for Bailey. They were all reunited and Bailey is safely back home. The incident just goes to show that dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.
