The World’s Most Expensive Drug Costs $3.5 Million Per Dose

Hemgenix, a single-dose cure for a form of the blood-clotting disorder hemophilia, recently set a new world record for the most expensive drug ever at a whopping $3.5 million per dose. The FDA approved Hemgenix to treat adults with hemophilia B, a disorder in which people don’t produce a critical protein needed to clot blood. Until now, typical treatments required routine injections to maintain sufficient levels of the missing protein, but thanks to Hemgenix, sufferers would only require a single IV infusion to be cured forever. The only problem is that the average person can't afford the cost and insurance companies don’t cover it. Currently, about 1 in 40,000 people have hemophilia B, most of whom are men.
