Something Physiological Happens When Our Inner Voice Speaks In Our Head

Almost everyone is familiar with the experience of their inner voice speaking to them in their mind. Maybe you’ve got an important meeting with your boss and silently in your head you’re rehearsing how the conversation might go. Perhaps you pass a grocery store and your inner voice yells at you, “We need milk!” The phenomenon is referred to as “inner speech” and it’s been studied since the dawn of psychology. What most people don’t realize is that when your inner voice talks to you, it’s accompanied by tiny muscular movements in the larynx. Don’t worry, no one will notice, including you. That’s because the movement is only detectable by a technique known as electromyography — recording of the electrical activity of muscle tissue using electrodes attached to the skin or inserted into the muscle. So, you can relax…….nobody but you knows you’re out of milk.
